NACHI Answers:

They are the weakest link and will release the chain if pulled too hard. They keep you from breaking the original chain, some of which goes inside of the fixture and is very time consuming to fix.

They sting or other material section also isolates the metal bead pull chain from the internal switch components in the event of a fault.
